Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy has retired from international football. The decision comes as the national team, sitting third in their World Cup qualifying group with three points, prepares for its next fixture against Mozambique on September 25.
The 34-year-old shot-stopper explained his choice after a distinguished career with the Lions of Teranga. He revealed he was approached by Patrick Vieira, the former French international recently linked with the Senegal head coach role. "Patrick Vieira still tried to convince me," Mendy said.
This announcement marks a significant shift for the national side, which must now identify a new number one following a run of five games without a win (one draw and four losses). The team's last outing was a 3-2 defeat in Belgium on July 1. The coaching staff will now assess the goalkeeping options available for the remainder of the campaign.
Mendy leaves the set-up after being a cornerstone of their continental triumph. His departure creates a vital vacancy in a team that has scored eight and conceded six goals this season. The next team sheet, available on our fixtures page, will be closely watched to see who takes over the gloves.
