Young Senegalese midfielder Bara Sapoko Ndiaye is targeting a starting role for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations following his breakthrough at Bayern Munich and his first World Cup experience. The 18-year-old, born in Mékhé, saw his loan move made permanent earlier this month and signed a professional contract running until June 2031.
The player was selected by coach Pape Thiaw for Senegal's 2026 World Cup squad. He made his tournament debut as a substitute in the 3-2 extra-time defeat to Belgium in the Round of 32 on July 1, 2026. This elimination concluded the World Cup campaign for the Lions of Teranga, who finished 3rd in their group with 3 points from one win and two losses.
Bara Sapoko Ndiaye joined Munich on loan in January 2026 after a spell with Grasshopper Club Zurich. His coach there, Gerald Scheiblehner, had noted his qualities. "He’s nippy and knows what to do in tight spaces," he said. The physically strong defensive midfielder quickly impressed, making his Bundesliga debut in April during a 5-0 win over St Pauli. Born in Mékhé, Senegal, Bara Sapoko Ndiaye developed at the Gambinos Stars Africa academy in The Gambia. This academy works with Red&Gold Football, a joint venture between Bayern Munich and Los Angeles FC. This partnership paved the way for training spells with Bayern's youth and reserve teams before his official loan. The player maintains a strong connection to his roots. "I want to be an example to other young players, like my teammates at Gambinos Stars, and show them that you can make it to one of the biggest teams in the world," he said.
The Senegal national team is preparing for life beyond the generation of Sadio Mane, Idrissa Gueye and Kalidou Koulibaly.
